legs, legs, legs

Some fashion/shoe advertising in the studio. It took 1 hour to set up the lights! The background was white so a lot of the colour I had directed at it, reflected off. That was incredibly annoying, and confusing to figure out. Towards the end though, finally decided to use a "snoot" on the light - which concentrates the light at one certain point - on the shoes but ran out of time (studio can only be booked for 3 hours).

oh! also i used the nikon d200 believing it may have nicer, finer grain than my d60. I didn't notice any difference. I love all the d200's short cuts and what not but it is confusing and verrryy heavy. I wouldn't mind reshooting these and experimenting with a few other colour combinations as well as poses.

Vampire Diaries photo shoot AND process

My final photography task. Originally based on the Vampire diaries, however i mostly drew inspiration from the "vampire" part and there isn't a real connection to the show, apart from the one image. It was more of a cinematic exploration, telling a story with still images; evoking emotions (primarily fear lol).
I did a few double exposures by "sandwiching" two negatives in the enlargers in the dark room. Took a lot of test prints, lots of dodging in, but i'm happy with how they came out. For the two scream images i took inspiration from russian surrealism in the 1930s. I had no particular photographer in mind, but my concept seemed adaptable to that style of photography, so when i was photographing it was in the back of my mind. I mean, vampires are surreal anyway.

Something i learnt from this task and photoshoot...
Planning a shoot is important - finding a location and already having an idea of where you'll place people and how is helpful before the shoot. Doing visual research, drawing on other photographers work for inspiration makes a huge difference.
Write it down - note some of the shots you want, because between interacting with the models, the camera and the scene, it's easy to forget and you get into panic mode. It also makes you seem organised.
Bring extra lighting - I used a windshield protector as a reflector which made a significant difference. A huge emergency light can work as well or a torch.
Explore the area - keep an eye out for things that are already there that you didn't picture in your head, such as the clouds and such, don't over look these things!
Go with your gut - behind the view finder things appear changed so just explore do some things organically, intuitively. Some of my stronger photos were last minute after thoughts, the last shot on a roll where i took more of a risk, noticed and took advantage of some nice lighting, or adopted another persons perspective.

Mostly that was a small reminder for myself, i hope it helps someone. I learnt something, feels good man. lol

Alcoholism

just an extra i liked
For our second task in photography, we were asked to explore night photography, and concentrate on showing what goes on at night secretly. This had a lot to do with darkness being evocative of mystery. I quite liked this task since i'm comfortable with dark and mysterious photos lol. We also needed to produce one partial portrait and one absent portrait. I wanted focused mine on alcoholism, not the teen binge drinking, but serious a serious take. My first roll was terrible, in two ways : 1. i didn't know how to use 3200 iso film properly, i didn't keep in mind the aesthetic differences ( large grain and little midtones ) and so i messed up my exposure times, producing very dark images i couldn't work with. 2. i did very cliche and uninspired shots of beer bottles with large shadows. nothing special. it was just documentary.
My second roll, luckily, was a lot better and i explored being in that state of mind, which comes through in my 2 final prints - seeing only the alcohol and being trapped in that way of living. The first image is more documentary, a simple shot of an alcoholics space. The 2nd image is my first double exposure :)

i think my photography has developed quite a bit since this series: experience you like
lol always embarrassing to look at work in retrospect

Bare and Clean

So for task one of photography 2 : documentation, we picked out of a hat, two "action" words to inspire a roll of photographs, otherwise we wouldn't know what to shoot. It didn't really matter particularly whether your word is communicated through the photographs, however my words were 'bare' and 'clean'.
My approach to bare was to link it with privacy, we bare or reveal something hidden - reveal one's true self - in private. Visually i expressed that through nakedness, however i also used the door way to reveal something hidden with a voyeuristic feel. The doorway also suggests that we may only catch a glimpse of someone in

My interpretation to clean negative and clinical, expressed with the

An Experience You Like

For my final photography assignment last semester, we were given the brief "an experience you like". I'm quite fascinated with street photography and the urban environment. Some street photography emphasises this "unnaturally quiet" aspects of urban living that doesn't sit quite right and has you on edge. Where noise is unwanted in the country, it is favoured, I find, in the city. In my neighbourhood, only the brave venture out alone. A small young girl like me sure can't!! It's the only time the streets are ever relatively quiet or empty, except for the occasional hum of an engine and drunken youthful laughter. I find the urban night to be quite mysterious... with so many people in a small area, there's always someone doing something; and I find myself imaging what that could be, early hours of the morning, forever undiscovered. So, though my pictures show my unease, it's still an experience "I like" because I find these things very interesting haha

The Reveal

An animatic which developed from a comic, to a storyboard, and to this video. I found it hard to communicate my idea in comic style, probably because I'm not much of a comics fan. However I do love films, so I found creating a storyboard quite enjoyable and easy to visualise what I wanted. This was the first time I ever used Flash, so I'm quite proud of it!

The "reveal" is a comic book character, sick of living between the pages, busts out and into the "real" world.

Sequence and Narrative

A comic i had to submit today for uni, based around the theme - the reveal. Not completely where i would've liked it to be, i struggled with the framing. However i'm a lot happier about where it is stylistically, compared to how it was when i started. I think i might try my hand at more comics in the future :)

Creative piece for typography

Where has the time gone? I mean speaking in real time. I've been staring at this blank page for over an hour with fleeting bursts of thought. And weird thoughts too. How I like the way my moustache tickles my lip. It's not a real moustache either, I can't grow hair there. I'm a little insecure, so I sometimes stick on a fake moustache made of horse hair. They smell at first, but you get used to it. What's cool about fake mo's is you can buy crazy ones that are hard to grow, like the common handlebar moustache, it's my favourite too. I particularly like to curl the tips. I only wear it on special occasions, or when I'm feeling frisky. I bet you're wondering if I date many women. Yes, yes I do. I bet you're also wondering if I just curled my fake moustache. And you'd be right again. I've never had a girlfriend however...they never seem to come back...Well I sure do like the single life.

Even more time has elapsed now. As you can probably tell, I have a short attention span. Maybe it's just because I'm so bored my mind has decided to leave. Speaking of leaving; on my peak hour train trip home, which consisted of me being wedged between two people, I saw some kids smoking cigarettes at Redfern station. This brought in me a swell of that fiery teenage rebellion, the thrill in knowing you'll be caught at any moment, that power you get from breaking rules. Until I remembered I never rebelled. And at that moment someone stepped on my foot as they were trying to leave the carriage, and any last pieces of self respect I had left decided to flee too. How can I say I've passed through adolescence without any rebellion!? Perhaps that's why my parents were always drunk and away on trips; not because they trusted me, but because I was boring.

I was the shy kid, I was that kid who thought he was cool because I didn't follow trends and in that way i would outwardly project 'coolness'. Yeah, my vests with a tie never caught on. I was never out kissing the prettiest girl in school, I was at home reading books or watching my favourite show

Typography

I just finished my last assignment, "type talks".
It's supposed to be an art poster about a conference.
We also needed to find a quote to add to it's meaning.
This was my interpretation:

It's on illustrator, i can't upload an illustrator file. so i print screened :D
Enjoy Francois!
